The newest generation of supercars is upon us. The Mclaren P1, Porsche 918, and the Ferrari the Ferrari all have fancy schmancy hybrid electric drivetrains. We've been hearing all about how great this technology is for supercars, most recently from Mr POWWER himself, Jeremy Clarkson, on the latest episode of Top Gear. But I'm sure many of you out there aren't totally convinced yet. So would you rather have one of these cars with nothing but the engine and a super light chassis? or do you truly believe this is what the future looks like?

The main reason I'm voting for less weight, less batteries is because..batteries die, you charge them, they die, you charge them ,and after a few years, they die..and the don't charge again. Imagine how much McLaren, Porsche, and Ferrari battery's will cost to replace. And without the weight of those batteries in the cars, they'd probably be just as quick on just the engine itself.

Supercars should be super lightweight, powerful, and with no hybridizations.
HYPERcars should be the ones with balls to the wall power and include KERS, hybrid motors, etc.

There comes a point in time when cars become so fast they begin to lose their drivability. I think with these hypercars that day has come. Honestly I'd rather have a more reliable and less intimidating super car from 5 years ago.

That's actually quite strange, I thought the McLaren and the Porsche would be pretty evenly matched. Personally, I had a little existential crisis choosing between them, but had to go for the P1 just because it's even more of a dream. But if I wee to own any of them, I think it'd be the Porsche.

hybrid supercars? they'll be responsible for the next generation of kids who feel it's necessary to carry an umbrella.

I suppose if you want to use updated terminology these are "hypercars."
I still refer to them as "supercars" in the 90s/00s sense (F50, Enzo, Carrera GT, F1, etc)

That only happens for modified cars, these new bred of hypercars are all about helping the driver to extract the most out of them, that's why they are often played down as "driving a playstation", there are so many helps there that the weakest link (the driver) is turned into an operator, the car will shift in milliseconds for you, it will know if you are attacking a corner too fast, it will know if your rear wheels are braking traction and it will compensate for you general lack of skills.
I'm pretty sure that driving a 980 hp LaFerrari is WAY WAY less intimidating than driving an F40 with its mere 470 hp as a V10 era Formula 1 with over 900 hp were less intimidating than the 80's Turbo engines.

I'm too torn to vote on the hybrid v. conventional for supercars. For one a supercar is supposed to be something that has all of the latest technology to make it go as fast as possible. Their hybrid drivetrains do that. And with the control systems they have now the hybrid aspect can actually be used to make them handle better. But at the same time sometimes less is more, especially when it comes to weight. I call it a push.
As for my favorite, the P1 is my favorite by a mile. The Porsche just comes across as too cold and clinical and the Ferrari the Ferrari just doesn't do it for me. The name just annoys the shit out of me and the styling is just too... something. The P1 to me is the best looking of the bunch and from all reports it is a wonder to drive.

I suppose you are right, that just brings up the new issue of are these cars still worthy driving machines. Or do you lose the bond between man and machine?

These cars aren't "raw" but then how many modern cars really are? We're in an age of driver aids not even being able to be turned off completely sometimes. But, the way I see it is, if someone wants that rawness, they can buy used, otherwise they can take advantage of some of the most advanced machinery on the planet.
